GENERALITIES


Ireland is a sovereign member of the European Union, which occupies most of the island of the same name. It has three of the four historic provinces: Leinster, Connacht and Munster Ulster being the fourth largest of which, known as Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom. In 1949 the Irish state was declared as the Republic of Ireland.


The state is a republic with a parliamentary system of government. The President of Ireland, who serves as Head of State is elected for a term of seven years and may be reelected only once. The president has overall protocol functions, but has certain constitutional powers and functions, assisted by the State Council, an advisory body.
